Training and Mountaineering in Huayna Potosí & Bolivian culture - Bolivia

Itinerary

Condor Travel Bolivia’s new mountaineering tour is the perfect opportunity to experience mountaineering in the Andes and the Bolivian culture. This 13 day tour comprises of three separate stages:

I - Acclimatization: The first five days serve to acclimatize those who are not used to higher altitudes, all the while also exploring La Paz and Lake Titicaca. During these five days, you will have the opportunity to get to know La Paz through the eyes of a local on the “Shoe-shiner’s Tour” and also learn about Lake Titicaca’s pre-Incan past, whilst hiking on the Sun Island at an altitude of 4,000m/13123ft.

Day 1. Arrival La Paz

Upon arriving in La Paz, Bolivia, you will be welcomed by one of the members of the Condor Travel Team, before being transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure, you will have the opportunity to relax or walk through the Main Square of the city on your own.

Overnight in La Paz

Day 2. La Paz – Shoeshiners City Tour (Hormigón Armado) + Cable car

After having a delicious breakfast you will take the Cable Car (named “Teleférico” in Spanish), to discover an incredible view of La Paz. This is the highest and longest cable car in the world!

After that, you will start the Shoe-shiners City Tour, which consists in a unique visit to the popular neighborhoods and markets of La Paz. You will be guided by one “lustra bota” or “shoeshiner”, who will give you a different impression of this chaotic city, complemented with its smells, tastes and scenery. The walking tour starts with a short visit of the cemetery, continuing to the “Fish Street”, the “Flower Market” and the “Uruguay Market” (with a unique bird museum). Here you will be able to see different types of birds and animals. You will continue to Eloy Salmón Street, a street filled with shops and stalls selling the latest technological devices. Then it's off to “Shopping Cholitas” where the actually “Cholitas” buy their typical skirts and blankets. Afterwards, you will visit the popular dining rooms of “Belen” and “Rodriguez Markets”. The walking tour ends in San Pedro Square, where the well-known Prison of San Pedro is located. You will have the day at leisure after this.

Overnight in La Paz

Day 3. La Paz – Copacabana – Sun Island

Going towards the North, you will arrive to Copacabana, a beautiful town in the shores of Lake Titicaca. You will visit the Virgen Morena and its church, followed by a stroll through the town. You will go to the Island of the Sun by boat, before enjoying a typical "Aptapi” lunch. After that you will visit the Pilkokaina ruins and then hike for about 45 minutes on your way to La Estancia Ecolodge.

Day 4. Sun Island

You cannot miss this great sunrise! You will go by boat to the Northern part of the island, visiting the Chincana ruins and the Sacred Rock. Then, you will hike and cross most of the island in order to return to the Ecolodge, which will take about 3 hours. There you will enjoy a traditional lunch, called Huatia, cooked underground, with the fire above it. The rest of the day will at leisure; a perfect opportunity to enjoy the beauty and mysticism of the area.

Day 5. Sun Island – Copacabana – La Paz

You will start the hike through the village of Yumani, in the Garden of the Incas, to see the Fountain of Eternal Youth. Then you will go down to the bay and take a boat to Copacabana, you will navigate for 1 hour until reaching the city. In Copacabana you will enjoy lunch or a box-lunch. After that, you will return to La Paz in a private transport.

II – Mountaineering course: You will spend the next five days in the Royal Andes Range, learning about mountaineering techniques and equipment. You will have the opportunity to practice your skills on glaciers between 4,900m/16076ft and 5,300m/17389ft. You will also be taught and accompanied by an experienced, professional mountain guide in every moment.

Day 6. La Paz – La Rinconada / Plaza de Llamas – Chiarkhota Lagoon

Transfer from La Paz to La Rinconada or Plaza de Llamas. From there, you will enjoy a beautiful 2 to 3-hour trek to the Chiarkhota Lagoon (4600m/15092ft). After arriving you will set up camp for the next days.

Day 7. Training day 1

The day begins with a 1 hour trek to Tarija Glacier (4900m/16076ft), where you will start with the training program and the familiarization with the technical equipment: crampons, piolet, harness and ropes. Then you will return to the camp and in the afternoon you will have a short introduction to knots and rigging.

Day 8. Training day 2

In the morning, you will do an hour and a half trek to the Condoriri Glacier (5000m/16404ft). Once on the glacier, you will practice using the piolets, ropes, crampon walking techniques and rope equipment movements on different gradients. You will return to camp and in the afternoon you will have a review of knots and rigging.

Day 9. Training day 3

On the last day of training you will have another 1 hour trek to the Tarija Glacier where you will pass across some of the glacier's cracks. Afterwards, you will ascend to the summit of the glacier (5300m/17388ft). After the activity, you will return to camp. The total hiking time on this day: 6-8 hours.

III – Huayna Potosi: After 10 days of acclimatization and training, this will be the moment you have been waiting for: reaching the summit of the Huayna Potosi (6,088m/19974ft). It will take 3 days to reach it, and you will stay at several camps on the way.

Day 10. Trekking Chiarkhota Lagoon – 2 high passes – Chacapampa

A 7-8 hour hike awaits. You will have an early start hiking towards Chacapampa (3850m/12631ft). During this beautiful hike, you will cross two passes, the first at an altitude of 5010m/16437ft and the second at 4915m/16125ft.

Day 11. Chacapampa – Botijlaca. Transfer to Base Camp of Huayna Potosi Mountain. Trekking to High Camp

You will do a 40 min hike down to Botijalaca, where a car will be waiting to take you to the Base Camp (4700m/15420ft) of Huayna Potosi Mountain. After lunch, you will start the ascent to the high camp (5270m/17290ft). After approximately 4 hours you will reach the camp.

Day 12. High Camp – Summit Huayna Potosi (6088m/19974ft) – Base Camp – La Paz

You will start the ascent of the summit very early (around 2AM) in the morning. After 6 hours, and if the weather and physical conditions allow it, you will reach the summit of Huayna Potosi. After enjoying the beautiful scenery, you will return to the high camp and base camp before transferring back to La Paz. Includes breakfast and box lunch

Day 13. Departure La Paz

At a designated time, transfer to the airport for your departure flight.

Javier Carvallo (52 years) is our best and most experienced Mountain Guide.

He has done many climbing (rock, ice, sky) courses in Austria (Naturfreunde) and validated his mountain guide title at the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). Since 2000 he has been guiding for Condor Travel Bolivia, taking care of our passengers and delivering them unforgettable experiences! He is one of the three Bolivians reaching the summit of Mt Everest!
