Winter in Ushuaia - Argentina

Day 1: Half-day excursion in Tierra del Fuego National Park

Transfer from the Ushuaia Airport to the hotel.

We leave Ushuaia, heading southeast along National Route No. 3, and arrive at the Tierra del Fuego National Park, which protects native plant and animal species of the sub-Antarctic forest, 11 kilometers later. There are excellent panoramic views of the Beagle Channel and the Bridges, Willie, and Les Eclauriers Archipelagos along the way. If you prefer, you can travel on the End of the World Train (optional), boarding it at End of the World Station after crossing the Pipo River Bridge. The rest will continue by bus.

At Ensenada Bay, we descend towards the Beagle Channel, where we might be able to see birds like geese and albatrosses. A special treat is being able to see Redonda Island and Estorbo Island. Next, we set off on a road through the forest with beat bogs on either side en route to Lake Roca, a glacial lake in a picturesque forest setting with mountains in the background. You will have 30 free minutes at the service area.

The last part of the excursion is the Cormorant Archipelago crossing and a visit to a genuine beaver dam. These industrious animals are both great engineers and the primary destroyers of the Tierra del Fuego forests. In Lapataia Bay, whose coast is rich in mollusks and mussels, there are vestiges of the indigenous Yamanas. There will be time walk along the wooden walkway, feeling the cold southern winds whipping your face and the realizing we are at the end of the world. Return to Ushuaia.

Day 2: Sailing the Beagle Channel

As the boat sails through the Beagle Channel, you will see Ushuaia’s most important buildings: the old garrison (Maritime Museum), the End-of-the-World Museum, and the industrial area, as well as Mount Olivia and Mount Cinco Hermanos.

As we close in on Isla de los Lobos, we can observe sea lions in their habitat, a site you will never forget.

Isla de Los Pájaros is the habitat of Magellan and imperial cormorants so have your binoculars ready. The next landmark is the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse built on an archipelago where the ship, Monte Cervantes, sunk in 1930.

We will return through the Paso Chico where we can see the Tunel and Fique estates. And the arrival at the city is a wonderful opportunity to witness the incredible backdrop that Mount Martial and its glaciers grant Ushuaia.

- An excursion through snow and fire: Tierra Mayor Valley on a winter’s night

The path through the forest and to the cabin is lined with torches, and awaiting us there is a delicious meal of brochettes and stews, prepared by an expert chef over an open flame, and hot, spiced wine. The specialty is “Café del Hachero”. There will be story-telling and guitar playing before we leave.

Day 3: 4x4 vehicles (full day)

Today, we will visit 2 lakes: Escondido and Fagnano, driving to them on National Route No. 3. We will cross the mountains at the Garibaldi Pass and reach Lake Fagnano on an old lumberjack’s path, stopping along the way several times at strategic lookout points. Lunch will be served at the Nunatak Lodge, located on the lakeshore. While the meat is being barbecued, you can explore the area or have fun on snowmobiles. After lunch, we will go to the Tierra Mayor ski resort; some optional activities include snowmobiling, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating. Those who don’t want to engage in the activities can appreciate the magnificent snow covered valley from the warmth of the lodge. Return to Ushuaia in the afternoon.
