Itinerary

Day 1: Jaen – Chachapoyas or Cocachimba

Upon arrival, you will be picked up from the Jaen airport and transferred to the hotel in Chachapoyas or Cocachimba.

Overnight in Chachapoyas or Cocachimba.

Day 2: Gocta waterfall

In this trekk to the Gocta Waterfall, you will go across sugarcane fields until you reach a clouded forest with orchard, mushroom and moss covered trees. Members of the Communal Association will accompany you along the way and will explain everything there is to know about the ecosystem that surrounds the area, as well as the history of its community and the waterfall, the third tallest in the world. You can opt for an early departure from the lodge for a chance to view some typical and representative birds from the area. In the afternoon, you can enjoy the wonderful hotel installations, with an impressive view of the Gocta Waterfall.

Overnight in Chachapoyas or Cocachimba.

Day 3: Kuelap fortress

You will discover Kuelap, the most important archeological site in the northern Peruvian Andes. On a guided visit, you will learn everything about this monumental fortress, which is located on top of Cerro Barreta; its platform reaches up to 600 meters in length and, at certain points, its walls reach up to 19 meters in height. You will be surprised by its imposing walls and its complex interior architecture, where you’ll find administrative, religious, ceremonial and residential areas, which are proof of the detailed organization of its ancient inhabitants.

Day 4: Karajia and Quiocta

You will visit two of the Amazon's most interesting places: Karajia and Quiocta. Head to the town of Lamud, where the adventure of exploring the Quiocta cave will begin. In its length of 545 meters, you will find stalactites and stalagmites, as well as some pre-Inca burial grounds. Once this visit is over, you will enjoy a delicious lunch in Lamud. Then, head to the Cruz Pata community, where you will walk towards the Karajia sarcophaguses. The design of these amazing coffins resemble the human figure and were used by the Chachapoyas culture to bury their deceased. While a guide explains everything about this wonderful place, you will be able to take some great pictures of the area. Finally, you will return to Cruz Pata.

Day 5: Leymebamba Museum and Revash Mausoleums

You will explore the Leymebamba Mummy Museum, a place dedicated to the Chachapoyas culture. In its five rooms you will appreciate the 261 mummies and 200 funeral accessories that the place owns, very up-close. Then, you will visit the Revash mausoleums, a holy land that belongs to the same culture. These collective tombs are located in natural caves or in excavations made on rock walls. On Sundays, the visit to Revash will be replaced by a visit to Yerbabuena, a place where the region’s largest market is located, which -due to low tourist presence- still maintains its traditional essence.

Day 6: Chachapoyas or Cocachimba - Jaen

At scheduled time, you will be picked up from the hotel in Cocachimba and transferred to the Jaen airport to take the flight to Lima.
