Visit Santa Cruz and the city of Chiquitania, home of the Jesuit missions from the second half of the XVII century, which still remain as an interesting portray of the legacy and presence of the Society of Jesus in Bolivia.
Welcome to Santa Cruz, a beautiful tropical city located at 437 mts. / 1,433 ft. above sea level, and the
gateway to the Amazon. Upon arrival in the evening you’ll be taken from the airport to the hotel.
During the morning we’ll begin our journey through the Chiquitanas plains, going along the Rio Grande and San Ramón until arriving at the Jesuit mission of San Javier (4 hours). This beautiful colonial village houses an impressive church, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Afterwards, traveling through open savannah and forest, we’ll head to the town of Concepcion (1 ½ hrs.), the biggest missionary center with an impressive Jesuit church. We’ll visit the church, which is a real gem of the 18th century. Its colonial temple of baroque style is complemented by the missionary museum, where original music sheets of the Renaissance Baroque Music are kept. We’ll spend the night in Concepción.
Overnight in Concepción, Santa Cruz
After visit we’ll pay a brief visit to the weaving and textile community of Santa Rita. There, we’ll have a chance to admire the skill with which the women artisans weave textiles with traditional practices and customs of the area, using cotton fiber and natural ochres. After lunch, we’ll set off our return journey to Santa Cruz (5 ½ hours).
