With a perfect year-round climate and stunning nearby attractions, Samaipata is a must for those exploring Bolivia’s eastern lowlands.
We’ll depart from Santa Cruz heading towards Samaipata, traveling 120 km (3 hours) through beautiful sub-Andean views until the “El Fuerte” Ruins, the largest example of pre-Hispanic architecture in South America. There, we’ll visit the museum and take a stroll around town.
In the afternoon we’ll continue our journey on to Vallegrande (3 hours). This province is located on the undulating lowlands of the Andes, getting its name from colonial times due to the big valley that crosses the land between the mountains. We’ll spend the night at Vallegrande.
Overnight in Vallegrande
After breakfast we’ll set off our journey to "La Higuera” (3 ½ hours) on a route through different picturesque villages such as Guadalupe, El Cruce and Pucará, among an undeniably magical landscape. Upon arriving at La Higuera del Che, a small town with a population of 110, we’ll visit La Escuelita (Community’s Little School) where "El Che Guevara" was executed on October 9, 1967. We’ll also visit the small Community Museum. After lunch, we’ll hike to the "Quebrada del Churo” or “Yuro” (2 Km.), the place where El Che was wounded and taken prisoner the day before his death. At the end of the excursion we’ll return to Vallegrande.
Overnight in Vallegrande
On our last day we’ll start off with a visit to the airport where Che Guevara’s human remains were found. We’ll also tour the museum and other important places in town related to “El Che”, such as The Laundry, where his body remained until the time of his burial. During the afternoon we’ll return to Santa Cruz.
