Day 1. Puno / Desaguadero / Tiwanaku / La Paz

We will be driven in private transport from Puno to Desaguadero, a town on the border between Peru and Bolivia, appreciating the countryside of the Bolivian altiplano along the way. Our destination is the Tiwanaku ruins, one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas as well as one of the most developed during its time. The main structures are: the Kalasasay Temple which boasts the Puerta del Sol [Gateway of the Sun], the carved monoliths of Ponce and Fraile, the Akapana Pyramid, and the Temple Semi-underground. There are two nearby museums displaying ceramic and stone artifacts from the site that we will tour. We will then continue to La Paz, where we will stay the night in a hotel.

Day 2. La Paz HD city tour

This 4 hour excursion through the city of La Paz includes stops at street markets where we can find all sorts of handicrafts, knitted goods, and component for shamanism . We will pass through its Colonial sections, visit the San Francisco Church, Museum of Gold, Murillo Square, and see a replica of the Temple Semi-underground of Tiwanaku. Next, we will travel to the modern sections of the city and then descend to an elevation of 3200 meters to the Valley of the Moon, an incredible place where wind erosion has fashioned the rocks into interesting shapes.

The afternoon is free for leisure time.

Day 3. La Paz / Copacabana / Isla del Sol

We will cross the altiplano to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca, a 3.5 hour drive from La Paz. We will take a city tour and visit the lovely church that houses the image of Our Lady of Copacabana, known popularly as the “Virgen Morena”. Afterwards, there will be a 1 hour boat ride to Huacani on the Isla del Sol. There we will try the tradition dish called Aptapi. Lastly, we will hike 45 minutes to the La Estancia Ecolodge.

Lodging at the La Estancia Ecolodge. Includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 4. Isla del Sol / Copacabana / Puno

Wake up early because sunrise on the island is a beautiful site you won’t want to miss. Today, we visit the ruins of Chincana and Roca Sacrada, a 1 hour boat ride, and then head off to the Isla de la Luna to visit the Inak Uyuy archeological site. Our last destination will be Copacabana (2 hours). Afterwards, we return to the city of Puno (3.5 hours).

  • Winter (June, July, and August): the water in the hotels may be very cold when you first turn on the faucet. It could take several minutes for it to warm up.
  • Museums in La Paz close in the afternoon on weekends and do not open at all on Mondays.
