Luxury cruise in the Amazon river - Peru

Itinerary

This 4 day Peru vacation takes place on the longest river in the world, the Amazon, onboard the Delfin, a luxury riverboat. There will be days of excitement and nights of enchantment, surrounded by an incredible variety of exotic plants and animals that you will not only see but actually have the chance to interact with. A one-of-a-kind Peru tour.

Day 1: Arrival to the city of Iquitos - boarding the Delfin

You will be transferred in bus 95 km from the city of Iquitos to the small town of Nauta on the banks of the Marañon River, a 1.5 hour ride, where you will begin this Peru luxury tour. There, the Delfin awaits you. You will be welcomed and assisted by the staff in the VIP Lounge before boarding the vessel.

Once onboard, you will be shown to your exquisite suite, where you will stay on the river trip. That afternoon, you will take part in Happy Hour and listen to a brief orientation lecture while the crew of the Delfin goes through their pre-launch routine.

While you sit on the upper deck's terrace, you will marvel at the most amazing panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. The ship's observation room is also open for your use, and there are maps to look over and videos to watch. Your naturalist guides will provide you with the details of your Amazon adventure: the route, the places you will visit, the plants and animals to look for, and the geographic setting and historical background of the area.

Finally, under the spell of a beautiful Amazonian night and feeling the caress of the rainforest's breezes, you will be treated to an evening of live music. The bar on the top deck will be open, so take advantage and try an original cocktail of regional spirits, cheerfully served by the expert bar tender.

Day 2: Trekking in the floodable forest - Yanayacu- Pucate River basin

Today starts off early for a good reason: morning is when the jungle wildlife is more active, so you will get to see more animals in action. The first outing is an interesting trek and wildlife quest through the rainforest. You will look for the famous rubber trees and the region's most common medicinal plants. Most likely, legions of squirrel monkeys will greet you as you become accustomed to the immensity of the forest. Later on, you will visit the Yanayacu-Pucate River, one of the most important zones in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, and with some luck you will see pink dolphins. You will explore several of its tributaries, like the Nauta Caño, and check out black water ponds. A real treat awaits you at the confluence of the Yanayacu and Pucate rivers: a refreshing swim in the famous black waters, something you can only experience on an Amazon cruise in Peru.

Day 3: Hanging bridges - Rafting and hiking through the primary jungle

Today's agenda features something different for a Peru tour: a canoe trip into a private reserve. Paddling your way to Lake Tawampa, you will enter a primary forest and, once there, make landfall and begin a hike on terra firme. The first thing that catches your eye is the massive trees of the tropical rainforest, but your destination is a network of hanging bridges, the largest of its kind in the Amazon. As you walk their 400 meters, you will see all types of birds and monkeys, common dwellers of the forest canopy. The afternoon is set aside for exploring an interesting black water tributary, the Nauta Caño River, which is home to a large population of river dolphins that rise out of the water for air, almost as if they breach the surface to welcome you. Of course, the first animals that greet you will be a host of different monkey species. There are also a great quantity of aquatic birds and gulls, which are the main animals you will find there. You can also try your hand at piranha fishing; we will provide you the rods and bait. The night is for exploring the jungle, too, using powerful flashlights. Our guides will take you on a hike to look for nocturnal animals, such as caimans, snakes, birds, frogs, etc. The Amazon never stops being an adventure, even at night.

Day 4: Visit to the community of San Francisco - manatee feeding - return to Iquitos

We will visit the community of San Francisco where we will have the opportunity to see and to share in the cultural wealth and talent of local craftsmen. You will be surprised by the quality of the pieces made from exotic wood, seeds, and palm fibers, etc. Enjoy the openness and hospitality of the local people, while learning about their unique folklore. After this, it is time to begin the trip back to the city of Iquitos and the end of your Amazon adventure, first stop being Nauta. You will arrive at the port and then board the bus, where our ground staff awaits you, for the 95 kilometer road trip to Iquitos. There will be a short pause along the way at the IIAP (Peruvian Amazon Research Institute) complex, where they raise endangered manatees and you have the chance to feed one of these baby wonders of nature. Current efforts to rescue and protect these mammals are quite intense in this region. Final stop is the airport; you will board the plane for your direct flight back to Lima.
