Ecuador, bird paradise - Ecuador


Day 1: Arrival in Quito - Sightseeing tour of the city

You will arrive in Quito and will be transferred fro the airport, to your hotel.

In the evening, you will discover Quito , Ecuador´s capital city , located in the middle of the world, approximately 2800 m above sea level. This night, enjoy the Colonial architectural masterpieces, churches, historical houses, squares, and convents, all beautiflly iluminated. It is a magical realm of cupolas and stories that pay homage to the city.

A private tour of the Santo Domingo church and convent, the best examples of religious architecture, could be included in your visit.

Day 2: Quito - Northwest cloud forest

You will leave Quito very early to begin your adventure on the eco-route called the "Paseo del Quinde", through one of the most important bird watching regions in all of Ecuador.

On this route, you can see dozens of hummingbird species, like the Black-breasted Puffleg, an endangered specie, as well as other birds. You will lunch at a local restaurant or on the road. There is also the Tandayapa Forest to visit, honored by Birdlife International as one of the world's most important bird watching areas, where roughly 300 species live, including the Beautiful jay, the Andean cock of the rock, the Violet tailed sylph, the Brown Inca, and the Purple bibbed whitetip.

Day 3: Silanche River Bird Sanctuary and the La Perla Protection Forest

You will explore the Silanche River Bird Sanctuary on its many pathways, and also from on high, atop its 15 meter (45 feet) observation tower. Some of the species you might get to see are the Purple chested hummingbird, the Black-tipped cotinga, the Slate throated gnatcatcher, the Scarlet breasted dacnis, and the Blue whiskered tanager.

In the afternoon, the trip continues through a tropical zone towards the Santo Domingo province, where the La Perla Protection Forest and its approx. 250 bird species are found. Some of these species are the Ecuadorian ground-dove, the White whiskered hermit, and the Red-rumped woodpecker.

Day 4: Tinalandia

You wil tour the world renown, Tinalandia is one of the top spots in the South of Choco region for bird watching. There are 350 bird species in its confines, with some examples being: the Snowy egret, the Plain breasted hawk, the Pallid dove, the Bronze winged parrot, and the Red headed barbet.

Day 5: Antisana Ecological Reserve

It will be an early morning departure for Quito, but along the way you will stop off at the Antisana Ecological Reserve, which serves as an ecological corridor between the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve and the Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park. The combination of these three creates one of the ten biodiversity hot spots on the planet. Several species of birds live in the reserve, among them: the Andean Gull, the Shining sunbeam, the Red rumped bush tyrant, the Black capped tyrannulet, and the Bar winged cinclodes.

Day 6 – 9: Quito - Amazon Rainforest (4 days / 3 nights program)

The Amazon rainforest offers a wide variety of programs. This is a unique opportunity to explore and experience one of the world's las natural frontiers while being accommodated in total comfort. The journey to most of the lodges begins in Quito, from where a 35 minutes flight takes you over the Andes Mountains snow-covered peaks and down over 8500 feet (2600 meters) into the Amazon region. Upon arrival to the airports of Coca or Lago Agrio, you will be transferred to the dock to board a canoe that will take you to the lodge.

You can choose one of the different birdwatching programs in the Amazon Rainforest that we offer for 2, 3 or 4 nights are available. Some of them can be joined any day of the week while ohters have specific departure days.

Day 9: Back to Puerto Francisco de Orellana

After breakfast, you will sail back down the Napo River to Puerto Francisco de Orellana for your return flight to Quito.

Day 10: Departure

At the scheduled time, you will be transferred to the airport for you international flight.

A very good option to compliment your trip will be to take a cruise to the Galapagos islands, a unique place in the world for birdwatchers.
